The 5 Most Iconic World Cup Photographs of All Time

The FIFA World Cup is not only the most watched sporting event, but indeed the most watched event period, in the world. During the 2014 World Cup final, nearly 1 billion people tuned in. Because of the event’s popularity, there is an unfathomable amount of video and photographic record for each match. From the professional photographers, to the fans in the stands, there is no moment left un-photographed or recorded.

With that being said, there are not a lot of photos of the World Cup that have managed to stand the test of time. That’s why at BorrowFox have compiled some of our favourite, most iconic World Cup photos.

Best World Cup Photographs

Perhaps the most famous image from World Cup history is the shot of Diego Maradona’s “hand of God” goal. The goal came off of a clear handball, but was not caught by officials. Argentina wound up winning the quarterfinal match 2-1 over England.

While Maradona’s hand of God goal might still sting for English football fans, Geoff Hurst’s finals winning match in 1966 is still something to be proud of. This photograph captures Hurst, front and center, celebrating the team’s victory over West Germany in the finals. Simultaneously, the feeling of defeat is captured perfectly by the West German player standing behind Hurst.

This photo from the 1990 World Cup final shows West German player Jürgen Klinsmann theatrically clutching his face after making contact with an Argentinian player. While it is controversial whether or not the contact made on the play was worthy of such a dramatic fall, the Argentinian player who made the contact was given a red card and was ejected from the game.

Among the millions of pictures taken over the World Cup over the years, many of them were taken in an attempt to capture victors celebrating. This photo of Italy’s Marco Tardelli after his side won the World Cup in 1982 is a great example of the pure elation that comes from winning the World Cup.

This photo captures Zinedine Zidane walking past the World Cup after being sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi in the 2006 final, which France then lost. The moment was one of the most dramatic World Cup moments in recent memory. The haunting black expanse of the sky mirrors the feelings of French supporters after the headbutt eventually led to France’s loss.

Featured Tech: Panasonic GH5 Hybrid Video and Still Camera

The Panasonic GH5 hybrid video and stills camera is an incredible piece of equipment. Since the release of the GH1 in 2009, Panasonic’s GH series has been a popular choice for photographers and filmmakers of all skill levels. The GH5 maintains the series’ celebrated commitment to quality and simultaneously improves and adds features that make it one of the best performing hybrid cameras on the market.

VIDEO

While the GH4 was the first in the series to offer 4K capabilities, the GH5 is an improved version. It offers 4K at 60 fps for high frame rate footage. At the same time, it can capture 1080p at 180 fps. Additionally, the GH5 has the option to record in 10 bit colour, giving you more freedom to tinker with the colour gradient when editing.

The camera also boasts a well-executed autofocus function. It makes subject tracking a breeze. Additionally, the focus transition feature allows for three different focus positions to be saved while shooting to ensure ease of use.

STILLS

The GH5 is perhaps best used as a video camera, but its ability to shoot high quality stills is nothing to scoff at. The camera is equipped with 20 Megapixels, and has a low level of noise at every ISO level. In all, the camera takes crisp, clean, and attractive photos for whatever subjects it is focused on. While it struggles slightly to capture extremely subtle textures, it is still a great all around still shooter.

GH5: A GREAT RENTAL OPTION

In a nutshell, whether you are looking for a great video or still camera, the Panasonic Lumix GH5 is a good bet. With a Sigma Art 18-35 mm lens included, the GH5 is available on BorrowFox for only £40 a day. It is no wonder that the camera is one of the most popular offerings on the platform.

Our Four Favourite Film Soundtracks

Best Film Soundtracks

The ability to craft a great movie is not just the role of a director. In fact, film is unique in  the art world in the sense that it takes a nearly unbelievable amount of cooperation and shared vision to create something special. If you have ever seen the credits for a feature length film, you understand that filmmaking is a collaborative effort – one that is significantly more than the work of just a director and a group of actors. One of the most important, and often unrecognized aspects of a film is the soundtrack. A well curated soundtrack can elevate a mediocre movie into a good movie, a good movie into a great movie, and a great movie into a masterpiece. At BorrowFox, we recognize the importance of all aspects of film production. That is we have compiled a list of four of our favourite movie soundtracks:

Dazed  and Confused

Richard Linklater’s classic coming of age comedy follows various different teenagers in a small Texas town on the last day of school in 1976. Teenage rebellion, apathy, and confusion mark the main themes of the film, and the soundtrack serves to heighten these emotions. Perhaps more importantly for the tone of the film, the soundtrack mirrors what teenagers in 1976 were actually listening to. As a filmmaker Linklater is rightfully lauded for his ability to capture different periods in history and the soundtrack for Dazed and Confused is a perfect example of that. Artists featured on the soundtrack include Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Deep Purple, Kiss, and many more.

 Killer of Sheep

Killer of Sheep, written, directed, produced, and shot by Charles Burnett, was completed in 1978 to little fanfare. However, over the years, the film has gained an almost legendary reputation as neorealist exploration of the life of poor black Americans living in South Central Los Angeles. At times funny, and at times brutally crushing, the film was Burnett’s master’s thesis at UCLA. In his attempt to capture the experience of the poor, disenfranchised black LA community, Burnett carefully chose a haunting soundtrack by a slew of legendary black recording artists including Etta James, Earth Wind & Fire, and Dinah Washington. In fact, for Burnett the music was so critical the tone of the film that, when he couldn’t afford to pay the $150,000 price tag for the rights, he decided simply to not release the film. There is a particularly beautiful and haunting scene in which an exhausted black couple dance to Washington’s “This Bitter Earth”. All in all, Killer of Sheep is a perfect example of how important a soundtrack can be for a movie to reach great heights.

Reservoir Dogs

Reservoir Dogs is easily one of Quentin Tarantino’s best pieces of work. The heist film is known for its graphic depiction of violence, as well as its stand out performances. However, perhaps its longest lasting contribution to the cultural consciousness is the soundtrack. The happy-go-lucky bouncy soundtrack, which includes songs by Steppenwolf, Bedlam, Joe Tex, and more, contrasts sharply with the excessibe violence. The most prominent example of this is the use of Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck In the Middle With You” which is played in the midst of a brutal torture scene.

High Fidelity

High Fidelity’s Romantic Comedy plot relies on more than just the directing of Stephen Frears, or the charismatic performances of John Cusack and Iben Hjejle. In fact, it is the film’s extensive, and meticulously curated soundtrack that most effectively drives the story’s action. The story is based on John Cusack’s character’s “top 5” girlfriends – an exercise he creates after obsessively creating top 5 music lists in his record shop. The pain, love, and humour that is displayed throughout the movie is constantly connected to various songs that reflect the different moods. The eclectic soundtrack includes songs by artists such as Public Enemy, Lou Reed, Elton John, and the Vaselines.

Featured Tech: DJI OSMO

The DJI OSMO is one of the most popular pieces of kit available to rent on BorrowFox. The OSMO is a unique handheld gimbal/camera combo that captures amazing perspective shots. As a company, DJI is mostly known for their high quality range of drones, which are also popular among BorrowFox users. While the OSMO is not a drone, it offers a similar type of easy to control freedom when it comes to photography and filmmaking.

The DJI OSMO is perhaps most easily comparable to the various cameras offered by GoPro. While GoPro certainly revolutionized the handheld, first person perspective camera, the OSMO effectively improves on the concept. The big improvement that DJI made is the built in gimbal attached to the camera on the OSMO. The gimbal provides self-correcting stability that gives the footage a seamless and fluid quality that is nearly impossible to find elsewhere for cameras in the same range.

On the gimbal, right below the camera itself, the OSMO has intuitive and well laid out controls that operate both the camera and gimbal. You can use the OSMO with these controls alone, and without a viewfinder, but if you want to see what you are shooting, you can attach a smartphone to the gimbal that will act both as a viewfinder and as a way to access more controls over the kit.

The camera itself can capture 4k video at 30 fps, and its lightweight build means that it is easy to bring to different places and operate with one hand. With a smartphone attached, you can even livestream your footage.

All in all, the OSMO is one of the best action cameras on the market today. Exceptional video quality, combined with an easy to use stabilizing gimbal, make it a must have for first person perspective action shots. With a price tag of up to £750, the OSMO is not cheap. However, at BorrowFox, you can rent the OSMO for as little as £10 a day.
